FT position available with growing technology and government contracting firm. The Cataloger/Systems Librarian will catalog materials of various formats using OCLC, SirsiDynix, commercial vendors' bibliographic records (Springer, IEEE) in the LC Classification system and DTIC tech report format, and do all system administration of the local SirsiDynix ILS as part of a library consortium. The Cataloger/Systems Librarian will occasionally work directly with customers on circulation and simple reference questions as needed, so a strong customer service focus is necessary.

Duties:                                                     

  • Maintain knowledge of current trends in professional cataloging rules and standards
  • Confer regularly with SirsiDynix ILS POCs and systems librarians in other libraries in our consortium
  • Advocate for enhancements to catalog
  • Troubleshoot any issues with ILS
  • Manage new releases and the implementation of new features. Trains staff on changes in software and procedures  
  • Cataloging tasks:
    • Participate in opening shipments, processing books and serial acquisitions
    • Search OCLC for MARC records, locate and match records to items needing cataloging, and edit records to conform to locally established standards
    • Load MARC record files from OCLC to local library catalog
    • Set up and run all reports to maintain ILS
  • Customer service tasks:
    • Perform basic circulation, directional reference questions, and present a positive customer-focused front in all interactions

Job Requirements:

  • MLS degree from an ALA accredited library school
  • Good working knowledge of the principles and procedures of professional library work including methods, practices, and techniques of library cataloging and classification
  • Excellent knowledge of computerized cataloging, metadata principles, MARC and OCLC record structures
  • Excellent knowledge of standard bibliographic sources, bibliographic form, and verification tools
  • Experience administering ILS and other library systems and applications
  • Good oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to be timely in responding to requests
  • Ability to be flexible, to use time wisely, and to perform duties in a professional manner
  • Willingness to help others accomplish their objectives
  • Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude towards co-workers, member libraries
  • Ability to work independently and in groups
  • Coursework in cataloging and ILS administration or equivalent work experience
  • Experience with DTIC tech report record format and work in a DOD library a benefit but not required
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Must be a US Citizen and able to obtain a security clearance
